Global Health Issues

There are a number of global health issues that currently need to be considered and examined. One cause of the many problems affecting global health is economics. In particular, the economic policies of richer nations enforced on developing nations. According to the World Health Organization there are currently 1 billion people on the globe without access to health care systems. One of the major causes of this is the policies enforced by the World Bank, World Trade Organization, and International Monetary Fund.

The economic policies of the World Bank, WTO, and IMF affect global health in many ways. One way is these organizations have caused increases in unemployment and poverty which in turn causes the return of many illnesses. These illnesses include the reappearance of cholera, typhoid fever, diarrhea, tonsillitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and malaria. These illnesses are rapidly expanding in developing nations, a major reason being the lack and deterioration of health care systems. Developing nations lack access to health care systems due in a large part to the economic policies of the World Bank, WTO, and IMF. These organizations enforce Standard Adjustment programs on developing nations in order to ensure debt repayment. These programs cause developing nations to focus more on developing economically. As a result health care services are either unavailable to the poor or too expensive.

The IMF and WB also establish privatization of health care systems in many developing nations. Privatization is another global health issue and is a major obstacle for the large population of poor people in many developing nations. By making health care too expensive, privitazation reduces access of services for these nations. The IMF and WB also enforce policies that further the interests of major pharmaceutical companies. The practices of major pharmaceutical companies also greatly affect global health. Many of these pharmaceutical companies take advantage of the poor in developing nations. These companies sell expensive drugs and market them with manipulative and false advertising. Many of the uneducated poor in developing nations are tricked into buying unnecessary antibiotics and at higher prices than they would be sold in richer nations. Pharmaceutical companies also use the IMF and WB to serve their own interests. They prevent developing countries from creating and selling cheap generic drugs by threatening to enforce economic sanctions.

Global health is affected by economics in many ways. Globalization in particular has had a major effect. The policies of economic global organizations have limited developing nations' access to essential drugs, cheaper alternatives, and have caused the deterioration of health care systems. Many of today's global health issues can be addressed by focusing on changing the policies of the WB, WTO, and IMF. These economic policies need to be changed to benefit the poor populations of developing nations. Economics affects poverty which in turn affects global health. Only by making changes in economic policies in order to bring about change in poverty can humanity hope to alter global health.
